Humanities 100:  Reading Assignment

Course Guide

Some of the reading assignments contain essays which are difficult to read if you go at them word by word, sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph. When reading essay material, scan the first few sentences of each paragraph throughout the entire essay to get a grasp of the topical development and emphasis.  Pick up on subtopics of interest and read further and more thoroughly after you have a sense of the entire work.  Train your eyes to seek out key transition words--thus, therefore, so then.  And look for complex sentences (ones with subordinate ideas) which will often start with words like since, although, because, whenever, and if.  Finally, and this is important for your general education, write down and look up all hard words.  Keep a list of these words and add them to your reading and listening vocabularies.  Speak those that titillate your tongue and ear.
